With summer officially starting this weekend, there is a myriad of wagering opportunities to challenge the skills of any bettor. Major League Baseball has a full schedule of games, the WNBA season rolls on, numerous motorsports circuits are holding events, and the pros on the PGA Tour are battling in New York for the prestigious U.S. Open title. Be sure to scan the LIVE ODDS page for all of the various wagering options.
In Major League Baseball, ample opportunities are presented both on Saturday and Sunday. For those from or fans of the teams from the Show Me State, Missouri, the I-70 series between St. Louis and Kansas City continues with a Fox Sports afternoon game on Saturday and a Sunday afternoon affair. Coming into the weekend, the Royals have a slim 8-7 lead the last three years.
In New York, Johan Santana (8-4, 3.29 ERA) will try to move ahead after 15-0 shellacking he suffered against the Yankees last Sunday and will go against Tampa Bay and James Shields (5-5, 3.52) of the Rays. Santana gave up a career high nine runs in three innings and has a 6.50 ERA in his last six starts. Shields is known for being almost impossible to beat at home, however is 13-19 with a 4.73 ERA in 47 career road starts.
Look for fewer empty seats at Landshark Stadium, with the Yankees visiting Florida. A.J. Burnett (5-3, 4.46) will have to be extra sharp against the Marlins Joe Johnson (6-1, 2.76), since the Fish have won 11 of Johnson’s 14 starts.
On Sunday, the best matchup of the day is in the Motor City, where Milwaukee and Detroit wrap up three-game series. The Brewers will start their ace Yovani Gallardo (7-3, 2.93) against Tigers top of the rotation hurler Jason Verlander (7-3, 3.39). Verlander was lit up in St. Louis in his last start, lasting only four innings, allowing five runs. He later said the heat and humidity did him in. Verlander and teammates are 7-2 as favorites. The Brew Crew is 9-4 with Gallardo toeing the slab.
Sportsbook.com has a number of NASCAR wagering options for this Sunday’s Toyota/Save Mart 350, which will be the first of two-season road racing events. Steve Makinen of StatFox.com had this to say about what possible wagers to consider.
“If you’re looking for some sleeper picks for Sunday’s race, there is a group of drivers worthy of consideration. Jamie McMurray has been a guy that has run up front often in Sonoma only to lose out on fuel miscalculations or other on track problems. At 20-1, he is a decent long shot to win. Also, Clint Bowyer has been a fairly consistent road course driver, ranking second among all active drivers at this facility in average finish, 8.0 in three starts. Carl Edwards (25-1) & Denny Hamlin (22-1) boast decent average finishes as well since ’06 at the road course events, both 11.5 or better, and Mark Martin is a savvy veteran who seems to have it all working at this point in the season. It would be a mistake to dismiss his chances at 20-1. Of the road course ringers, Boris Said and Ron Fellows, both 28-1, boast the best chances. Keep in mind though, regardless of their unique skill set, they are still driving for teams not typically known as strong at other tracks. If you’re looking for some drivers to fade in matchups or group wagers this weekend, consider Jimmie Johnson (22-1). For whatever reason, he has not done well here, averaging a 19.3 finish over his career, winless in seven starts. Kasey Kahne (66-1), David Ragan (150-1), and David Reutimann (125-1) are a trio of drivers that own average finishes of 24.8 or worse in the last six road course races as well.”
The WNBA has only one game on Saturday, but have five contests to choose from on Sunday. The one to watch here is San Antonio and Connecticut, with both clubs starting slower than expected.
In MMA action, UFC -Ultimate Fighter 9 Finale is at The Palms in Las Vegas Saturday night. Clay Guida (25-9) has reeled off three consecutive victories and thrust himself into title contention in the lightweight division after losing to Roger Huerta in 2007. Guida is a fan favorite with his charismatic style and is a +250 underdog to Diego Sanchez (20-2). Guida has an extensive wresting background, which makes him a real threat to pull the upset since Sanchez only apparent weakness is when he is taken down.
