PIGGS PEAK PLAYS IT SAFE
2010-09-03

Online casino company will respect South African ban pending its appeal
Swaziland-based Pigg’s Peak Online Casino has ceased to operate in South Africa since Saturday, reports the Times of Swaziland.
The cut-off was at midnight on Saturday, pending a court appeal judgement, Operations Director Lew Saul Koor said.
The shutdown was on the advice of the casino’s lawyers after the Swaziland-licensed online casino lost a North Gauteng High Court challenge to the Gauteng Gambling Board, supported by the National Gambling Board, about where online gambling takes place — where the server is situated (Swaziland) or where the person is playing (SA) (see previous InfoPowa reports).
The SA authorities claim that the ruling also made it illegal for internet service providers and financial institutions to advertise online gambling or facilitate transactions.
Koor said that although the casino was in the process of applying for leave to appeal, "We have been advised we should stop operating for South African players until the matter has been resolved".
Koors said that players’ balances can be cashed in by e-mailing support@piggspeak.com.

Sportsbook.com closes Survivor Nicaragua Odds
2010-09-01

Thanks to irregular betting patterns from their customers, online gambling giant Sportsbook.com closed betting odds for the upcoming season of the reality show Survivor.
“Within a two day period we noticed an inordinate amount of wagers coming in for a male to win this season’s show,” explained Sportsbbok.com spokesman Dave Staley. “Considering that this show has already been shot, a handful of people know which contestants make it to the finals. Those folks are obviously trying to make a quick buck and I can’t blame them one bit.”
Now of course, all of those that are in the know are supposed to keep their mouths shut, but it is obvious that they have been tempted by the almighty dollar – shocker.
What we don’t know is whether former Dallas Cowboys and Miami Dolphins head coach Jimmie Johnson will make the finals. The Super Bowl winning coach and NFL analyst is actually a contestant on this season’s show.
Even though you might have missed out on Survivor Nicaragua betting, you can still profit handsomely on another type of Survivor. Sportsbook.com is putting $50,000 up for grabs in what is being considered the most generous NFL Survivor Pool on the planet. Head over to the site and register now.

GAMBLING SHOWS HIGHEST INTERNET VISIT GAINS
2010-08-30

Latest com.Score numbers again illustrate the popularity of internet gambling sites
The statistical measurement firm com.Score's July 2010 report on internet activity again illustrates the universal popularity and interest in online gambling, with gambling related websites among the highest gainers compared with the month of June 2010.
Online gambling sites attracted a total of 13.4 million unique visitors during July.
Part of July's 11 percent gains in unique visitors came from interest in the annual World Series of Poker tournament, which drove traffic to online gambling sites during the month, especially once the main event had started.
"The World Series of Poker tournament brought out the competitive side of Americans in July, prompting millions to visit online gambling sites to test their card-playing skills," said Jeff Hackett, senior vice president of comScore Media Metrix.
The main event of WSOP took place in July, spurring interest from more than 13.4 million internet users who visited an online gambling site during the month, an 11 percent increase versus June.
PokerStars ranked as the category leader with 2.4 million visitors (up 8 percent), followed by FullTiltPoker with 2.3 million visitors (up 14 percent), Kingolotto Network with 2 million visitors (up 31 percent), and UltimateBet.com with 1 million visitors (up 33 percent).
In terms of the highest gainers category, online gambling held a slight edge on Retail Toys, Retail Mall and Travel Information, which were all up at the top of the list on 11 percent.
In the Top 50 properties visited, Google sites ranked as the number one property in July with 178 million unique visitors, followed by Yahoo! sites with 174 million and Microsoft sites with 165 million. Interestingly, the much-used Twitter site ranked 50th!
In Ad Focus Ranking, the BrightRoll Video Network led for July with a potential reach of 96 percent of Americans online, followed by SpotXchange Video Ad Network with a 93-percent reach. YuMe Video Ad Network climbed four spots to capture the number 3 spot with an 89-percent reach.

CANADIAN GAMBLING REVENUES ESSENTIALLY UNCHANGED
2010-08-30

Stats Canada reports on the 2009 numbers
Net revenue from provincial government-run lotteries, video lottery terminals, casinos and slot machines not in casinos totalled Cdn$13.75-billion in 2009, essentially unchanged from the year before, Statistics Canada reported this week.
The monitoring agency revealed that revenue from gambling plateaued at roughly Cdn$13.7-billion in 2007, and has remained at a consistent level ever since.
In 2009, casino gambling accounted for 34 percent of the net revenue, with lotteries making up a further 26 percent; slot machines outside casinos, mainly at racetracks 21 percent, and VLTs 19 percent.
Profits from gambling totalled just over Cdn$6.7-billion in 2008, or 4.7 percent of all provincial revenue.
Using 2008 numbers, Stats Canada reports that gambling participation and average expenditures increased with household income. For example, 51 percent of households with incomes of less than Cdn$20,000 gambled, spending an average of Cdn$395.
Among households with incomes of Cdn$80,000 or more 78 percent gambled, spending an average of Cdn$555 in 2008.
Provincially, average household spending on gambling in 2008 was highest in Saskatchewan at Cdn$720, followed by Alberta at Cdn$645. It was lowest in Quebec at Cdn$390.

ALBERTA GAMBLING REVENUES RIVAL ENERGY CONSUMPTION
2010-08-30

Gambling revenues are fuelling Alberta’s government, with income comparable to both oil and gas.
Residents in the Alberta province of Canada like to gamble, and to a lesser extent enjoy throwing back the odd alcoholic beverage, it appears from recent survey results published by the National Post newspaper this week.
So much so, that revenues from gambling (Cdn$1.3 billion) and alcohol (Cdn$700 million) rival those from energy resources like conventional natural gas and crude oil income.
The newspaper reports that in the current budget year royalties from conventional natural gas are forecast to hit only Cdn$1.9-billion this year - way down from the Cdn6 billion of four years ago. Estimated conventional crude oil income for the year is also projected to reach about the same amount.
The numbers continue a trend from the 2009-10 fiscal year, and as the National Post observes, are part of an intriguing trend in which government income from gambling and alcohol consumption is increasingly rivalling that which it derives from the province’s geological wealth.
“It’s a reliable source [of revenue] and they depend on it. That’s the worrisome thing,” Robert Williams, a co-ordinator with the Alberta Gaming Research Institute, told the newspaper, adding that Albertans are already near the top of per-capita gambling in Canada, spending an average Cdn$951 per person in 2009 - far more than almost every other province. [Ed. note: see following story for Stats Canada numbers]

Revenues from alcohol and gambling are key to social program funding, the report notes, with government income from alcohol going into general revenue for spending, while gambling dollars are allocated to the Alberta Lottery Fund, which then distributes the cash among hundreds of groups and agencies in the province.
“You’ve got a real variety of where the money goes,” said Lynn Hutchings-Mah of the Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission. “The grants do go back to support a lot of volunteer and community projects and initiatives.”
Alberta faces a record Cdn$4.8-billion deficit this year, and revenues from oil and gas are declining.
Bob Ascah, director of the University of Alberta’s Institute for Public Economics, said low natural gas revenues are part of a new reality in the province, at least for the next few years.
He told the National Post that several factors are driving the decline, including falling conventional gas production and growing shale gas activity in the United States, which has reduced U.S. reliance on Canadian gas.
Ascah said he expects to see Alberta taking a considered look at forays by British Columbia, Quebec and some Maritime provinces into online gambling, along with the possibility that Ontario may also be making such a move. Such a venture could provide much needed new income sources that aren’t tied to volatile oil and gas.

COMMERCE DIRECTOR RESPONDS TO PPA CRITICISM (Update)
2010-08-30

Poker room is clearly concerned at the possibility of offshore competition
Tom Malkasian, a director of the Commerce Casino, has responded to the Poker Players Alliance's 'Players Before Profits' campaign (see previous InfoPowa reports) in which the million strong action group urged US players to voice their disapproval of the Californian card room's opposition to federal legalisation of online poker.
In a company statement, Malkasian defended the Commerce position, saying: “The Poker Players Alliance is ignoring the grave threat that the federal and state legislation [to legalise online gambling in the USA] poses to everyday poker players. America’s poker industry should be united in opposing the Frank and McDermott legislation and keeping American dollars at home.”
Malkasian, whose company was allegedly involved in a bid for exclusive Californian intrastate online poker licensing in collaboration with the Morongo Band of Mission Indians, appears to fear the competitive possibilities of a legal market, saying in the statement:
“Federal and state regulation of online poker is coming and we can either fight to ensure that poker players’ interests are protected or allow illegal foreign operators, who are siphoning millions of American dollars out of this country, to dominate the U.S. market."
However, he then appears to be supporting the idea of legalisation with a sentence that stated: "We support the passage of federal and state legislation that will provide California poker players with a safe, secure, and well-regulated online playing environment" before reverting to his original position by adding:
“If domestic card casinos do not defend themselves from offshore interests, we stand to lose not only revenue but also the loss of jobs. We are against the Frank and McDermott bills. (The) Poker Players Alliance should be against this, too.”
Malkasian has in the past characterised independent and expert valuations of the US online gambling market at $42 billion over the next decade as “based on false assumptions and conflicting representations,” but he has not yet presented a factual counter-argument.
